Nottingham University’s new sculpture

It’s up! They’ve put the new sculpture in place ages ahead of the opening ceremony on Bastille Day (which unfortunately clashes with Full Council.)

I wrote about the new buildings a few months ago.  I haven’t been to take a pic myself of the new statue, but you can find one on Flickr here.

I quite like it.  I can’t wait to see what it looks like at night – it’s apparently lit up – and I will find an excuse to do a drive-by soonish.

Nottingham North’s MP Graham Allen wrote to the planning committee to commend it, when it came before us for planning permission a few months ago.  He not only liked that, but wanted half a dozen more 60m high statues in various places across the city.  Connected by LASER BEAMS!!!!

It’s hard to imagine Graham Allen as a Bond villain.

I have the sad fortune to live in a position that has sight of the new “sculpture”. A few months ago the council fitted a huge green pole in a tree filled area right across from my bedroom window. The massive thick green pole houses a cctv camera that has been fitted to further erode what little privacy we have left. Now beyond the green pole I see Nottinghams new £800000.00 “sculpture”.

I don’t want to sound ungratefull but the huge green pole is far more inspiring as a piece of art than the shity red “sculpture” that sits on the horizone behind it!

I have no idea how much the “green sculpture pole” cost but I bet it was a good deal cheaper than the red thing. I have an eye for beauty but this thing ain’t no Angel of the North, at best we could call it “unfinished scaffolding” or ” meaningless red framework”.
Give me fifty grand and I will make something for Nottingham that has meaning and beauty and is not some bullshity “art for arts sake” crap.

So sorry if I sound a tad bitter but remember I do have to look at the thing each day.

My one consolation is that there is a big tree blocking 3/4 of it from my view. If I live another 2o years or so and the tree is not lopped I may see a day when it is fully obscured.
That confirms to me that real beauty is to found in nature!

Please correct the spelling mistakes in my reply, I am not well educated. Perhaps if I were I would be able to see the “Art through the trees” Cheers

The only spelling mistake I see is “ungratefull” – only one l.

There aren’t many houses that can see it – what road are you on? Orston?

Well there is Horizone for a start which naturally should be Horizon.
It defeats the object if I correct all my own typo’s not having an education and all!
